After a bit (still on the first page of results), came upon this http://vaultingvellum.blogspot.com/2010/05/world-lit-only-by-misconceptions-1.html (and their further discussion in other posts). Following some of the links in the comments, and reading other stuff on their blog convinced me that the controversy exists among "real medievalists", rather than less knowledgeable folks.
