I followed the link to octonions – interesting stuff.

I have more recent photos I took of the plaque (it is much cleaner than in your photos) and had previously stumped Google Images. “Stone bricks” was all it could tell me. So this morning I tried Bing, Yandex, and TinEye (I am learning!!) and none of them could tell me what or where it was, though the first two similar images returned by Yandex were of the plaque. Bing transcribed some of the text but no more.

I was once teaching grad math students and on one 16 October one of them brought a cake to class decorated with “Happy Birthday Quaternions”. I also like a lot the Context Lesson.

I asked because I was almost sure Remmij had the answer with the first post (the cast iron) and also because many times with objects, insects and others, even having context (not all) was harder to find or impossible. Of course, as you have mentioned in some occasion, we can only find something if that something is on Internet. In my case either I did a not so good search (most probably) or those objects aren't on Internet (at least with the photo angle I took)

I love rabbit homes because even if I don't have the right answer, I always learn and discover new things. As a University teacher said once: What is the worst thing that can happen? (He was talking about a test but applies to everything) We said a lot of things like, fail the test, retake the course and others. His answer was no the worst thing that can happen is that you learn. And he is right.

Thanks again, Dr. RussellRamon Gonzalezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16129830563029534511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953008377950396317.post-53219027253167173062021-06-21T15:32:55.795-07:002021-06-21T15:32:55.795-07:00a rose is a rosaceae is a rosa…… Brougham

I thought I was William Hamilton at the Broome Bridge and I wasn’t…. being blissfully unaware that my search strategy had led me to an incorrect answer. In this case, there really wasn't enough information to figure out #2 without additional information. It took me a while when I found this thing, and I HAD all the context.

Importantly, you can always ask for more data. Unless it's a school exam, in real life you can nearly always ask for more information.

As a calligrapher myself, I appreciate that "older technology" can mean many things. I initially had no interest in this quest and did not intend to pursue it. Then I saw the hint “older technology for writing” and I was intrigued. Neurons started firing, connections were being made, and I was Alice down the (wrong) rabbit hole. The hint was accurate, but I interpreted it through an inappropriate filter.

I think a lot about how I think and I was dead wrong on this one.

Happy Father’s Day everyone.
Mathladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05805035115941387152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953008377950396317.post-47321719657406428622021-06-18T14:49:57.698-07:002021-06-18T14:49:57.698-07:00Hi Dr. Russell.
I was thinking. And I know it...Hi Dr. Russell.

I was thinking. And I know it's dumb. In Q2, if you couldn't give us the big hint (suppose you didn't know from what thing that came) How can we search and find the answer, if Google Image or others can't find? That becomes an impossible Challenge, right?

I was thinking that and I think those questions can be answered if someone shares those big hints of contextRamon Gonzalezhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16129830563029534511noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953008377950396317.post-23665321124289260012021-06-17T17:40:03.895-07:002021-06-17T17:40:03.895-07:00non-Remingtonnon-Remington
remmijhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17985809654574916217noreply@blogger.com
