The latter caused me to wonder…. At the animal shelter where I volunteer we have seen hairless versions of the domesticated Norwegian rat whose bodies resemble that of the mole rat (though significantly larger). Could the two rodent species be related? It turns out not, and the hairless domesticated rats actually have a shorter life span than the furry members of their species.

I brought home two bunches of sunflowers from the Farmer's Market this morning.

Mathladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05805035115941387152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953008377950396317.post-41868248354120094062021-07-31T15:48:03.356-07:002021-07-31T15:48:03.356-07:00fwiw - also from Wired…

The empirical approach to studying building numbering was not very systematic, but it was a lot of fun.

Thanks for the references. I am going to...I’m glad you kept with it too, Jon.

I am going to be contemplating this one for a while, a feast of food for thought. (Why was the Samoan hotspot the most obvious "other" hotspot, rather than the one that created the Galápagos Islands as I had thought?) I really enjoyed this challenge, and learned some unexpected concepts even though I did not find the correct answer. In my world, this challenge would be called a true problem, in contrast to an exercise, which can be completed more easily and in less time. There are times to chase down facts, but tasks like this highlight the different ways people think.

Every time I see an Olympian with a sunflower, I feel like I know a secret.

If I can share a personal story about a connection whose insightfulness (or spuriousness) I have never been able to assess -

I used to teach math at a university. One of my colleagues told me that he was teaching his students about parity: If we add (or subtract) two even numbers or two odd numbers together, we get an even number. However, if we add (or subtract) an even number and an odd number together, the result will be an odd number.

One student asked, “Is that why they put the odd numbered houses on one side of the street and the even numbers on the other side?” (I know this practice is not universal and Google Maps and I went capering about the globe finding out how cities in other countries number buildings and why.)
Mathladyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05805035115941387152noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4953008377950396317.post-79283603121210818712021-07-28T13:52:51.559-07:002021-07-28T13:52:51.559-07:00I surely did enjoy this Challenge.
