Troika (a London-based art studio) created this sculpture called "Cloud" for the British Airways luxury terminal at Heathrow Airport.
ReplyDeleteIt took me about 2 minutes too. The first minute I spent trying to do a similar image search, but nothing came back.
So I watched the video again, but this time closed my eyes to listen to the announcement in the background to get a clue. It was British Airways, so I took a quick guess at it being in Heathrow and typed in "Heathrow airport sculpture", and there were a couple video results up top that looked similar, one of which was labelled "Troika - Cloud, Kinetic Sculpture 2008" and led to the Troika webpage. (Tried again later with "british airways sculpture" and got the same results)

I couldn't tell if the circles were mirrors, disks, or lights, but finally, a Google Image search for "airport flipping disks hanging sculpture" got me the correct matching image as the first result. That site only got me the "Heathrow" element, but my next Google search for "heathrow hanging sculpture" led me to the Troika website.

I searched for "mall sculpture flipping disks" through google image. which led me to the link http://piquantphotos.blogspot.com/2011/07/heathrow-views.html detailing the location of the sculpture. Then I searched "heathrow terminal 5 flipping disk sculpture" which led me to: http://www.fastcodesign.com/mba/1662503/sculpture-that-darts-and-shimmers-like-a-school-of-fish and a write up about TROIKA and listed the Heathrow sculpture as their work.
This is 'Cloud' commissioned by Artwise Curators and manufactured by Mike Smith Studio. It is hanging in London's Heathrow Airport Terminal 5.

So I tried searching for BA flights to Venice, in the hope of working out possible depature points. There were a few; including Heathrow. So I Googled airport sculpture Heathrow; and, scanned the images that came. The 3rd one took me to Troika.
I think it took about five minutes, but I wasn't timing it. I went to image search and typed in "mirror" and "sculpture". That got me enough that I knew I was in the right direction. I added in "airport" and it popped right up. It is called Cloud. It was made by Conny Freyer, Eva Rucki and Sebastien Noel. It is hanging in the Heathrow Airport. ReplyDeleteI searched for "kinetic sculpture airport" in Google images. It was on the 3rd or 4th page of results. Once I had the name and location of the sculpture, a regular Google search brought up an article about the sculpture on Gizmondo which had the name of the design studio. It probably took about 3 minutes.

I was having trouble finding it on Google Image using all sorts of straightforward queries like [ airport reflective disk sculpture ]. Considering the background looks more like a mall, I guessed Heathrow as the only airport/mall that came to mind. The sculpture comes up first under [ heathrow moving sculpture ], as CLOUD by Troika.

knew you had been in the NL so checked the airport @ Schiphol for sculpture first with no luck. Then used this [mirror cloud OR snake sculpture in airport] & that led to the answers at the following site, then looked up Troika's site/info - about 5 minutes to find the answers, further reading and this response, +10 more - knowing the sculpture's location is a big advantage. In the video you can hear British Airways mentioned.

It is strangely mesmerizing.
Took me under 5 minutes. The strategy the worked was a Google Image search for "airport sculpture kinetic" and then visually scanning the images. I tried a regular Google search first but it wasn't very fruitful.

Second search for "troika sculpture" and found a video of the item on youtube.
Googled "airport mirror flip sculpture". First result lead to a youtube video. Video description lead to the studio - Troika - and the sculpture - Cloud.

Google Search for [heathrow hanging sculpture]. Found a lot of stuff about upcoming installation in Terminal 2, called “Slipstream,” not the one you’re asking about.
Google Search for [heathrow hanging sculpture –slipstream]. Most promising result was troika.uk.com/cloud, which tells the rest of the story.

It took me about 5 minutes...I started with sculpture moving mirrors airport and found the Troika Cloud Kinetic Sculpture in a YouTube video. I then searched Troika Cloud Sculpture and found it hanging in Heathrow's Terminal 5. I discovered mirrors may not be an inherently accurate description of what the sculpture is made of, but it at least got me started in the right direction. Now I really hope I'm right!

ReplyDeleteand found the same sculpture named the "cloud" by troika. The "cloud" is placed at the Heathrow Terminal 5 in London. Took me 5 minutes my connection is flaky.
It took me about 30 seconds : I listened to the audio, heard announcement for a British Airways flight 594 to Venice, searched "BA 594" in Google, the result page told me it flights from London, then searched "sculpture heathrow airport", the first two results (youtube and troika.co.uk) did the trick.

An interesting piece "...On top of an aluminum body sit 4,638 dots that can turn from silver to black in one quick flick. Beneath that lies two electronic drivers, 134 distribution boards and over 16,500 feet of cable. Controlling the flip-dots was harder than normal, however, and Pharos Architectural Controls, a company which develops electronic controllers for lighting applications, had to fiddle around with the control parameters and rewrite firmware on the drivers."
