ANSWER - Nijmegen, Gelderland, the Netherlands
ReplyDeleteTried searching by image. No results.
Image searched ["coat of arms" garden flowers] and filtered by the color orange. Didn't find the image but found a picture of a man with the lions as a tattoo under his eye. The web page identified the lions as "dutch lion".
Image searched ["coat of arms" garden flowers] and filtered by the color green to find this http://www.flickr.com/photos/stewie1980/3723437695/ where it identified the Waal Bridge.
Searched [waal bridge] to get http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Waalbrug
6 minutes.
Trickier than I thought at first but 5 minutes into it I found the answer using Images |Coat of arms flowers | and the answer was about a dozen rows down.
ReplyDeleteThe flower medallion in this photo represents the Nijmegen coat of arms. Noviomagus was the Roman name for the city. Holland.
Bright flowers on a grey day like this is a treat
Good Day Dr. Russell. Happy Holidays!
ReplyDeleteI used the clues that I found: double headed eagle. Lions. Orange (Netherlands)
Searched:

ctrl F [Netherlands]

A: Nijmegen, Netherlands
Wish you a Happy Year and abundant !! 2013 !!
finally I got no result with above pic on Google Image. The Procedure I applied is:
ReplyDeleteI went to above site and downloaded the picture to my desktop and then from my desktop I drag it to the Google Image Search Bar and after being uploaded for a few second I found no result associated with it. In this way I found no result.
Do please let me know the answer if I am wrong.
This one took me a couple of hours. I thought at first it might be in the UK because of the coast of arms but could not find one that matched. I tried searching the elements of the design - lions, crown and what I thought was a Phoenix. However, I then discovered that it is a double eagle, while looking over some of the designs. I tried searching lawn art flowers and found the Brussels flower carpet so this made me think it might be in Belgium or a neighboring country. When I looked more closely at the image I realized that this was probably a permanent installation in a park. I continued to pursue the design of the image and after scanning the image results, it seemed to match the coat of arms of the city of Nijmegen in the Netherlands. Searching images for the name of the city, coat of arms, and flower led me to a number of sites that showed the correct image in the city near the River Wall. I tried finding it on Google Earth, but was unsuccessful.
ReplyDeleteBing maps, 'bird's eye view' shows a nice rendition.
Deletehttp://binged.it/Vk5SlT
no need to search, this is in my hometown nijmegen, below the belvedere tower at the valkhof
ReplyDeleteif you look closely you can read noviomagus the latin name of the city
It would be harder if the name of the city wasn't plainly visible
ReplyDeleteYou have good eyesight. I started out by trying to read this but couldn't figure it out, only thought was there seemed to be a Cyrillic 'yu' in there, evidently I was wrong...
DeleteI then searched for lion rampant escutcheon double-headed eagle in image and text searches, and on Wikipedia, but only came up with duchy of Finland, Montenegro, and other similar ones. Didn't make the orange connection, or even try flowers, lawn art, etc - so not very clever of me! Anyway, gave up and found the answer on here as I have to get back to work...

ReplyDeleteGoogle search terms: civic heraldry lions rampant eagle (page 11)
Took five minutes to get there, but figuring out the civic heraldry bit took much more than that.
struggled with this one, about an hour. Image search no use. Various terms, no use. Ultimately search of "flower coat of arms" and image retrieval showed...

Bloemenwapen (city arms of Nijmegen made of flowers) at the Voerweg
Nijmegen coat of arms in Nijmegen, Holland.
ReplyDeleteI simply searched on Google Images for coat of arms until I saw one that looked similar. When I saw it looked like the coat of arms for Netherlands, I then typed in Netherlands Coat of Arms Flowers and it came back in the first page of results.
I started out with the basic: Right-click on image, "Copy Image Location". Google Images, click on the camera, and paste in the URL.
ReplyDeleteFor some Googley reason, I got pictures of rugby players instead of flower gardens.
So, Image Search with terms "flowers coat of arms".
Second line of Page 3 shows a postcard with the image.
Links to a page called "Orphaned postcard Project", with a blog posting from August 2012.
Location: Nijmegen, Holland. This is the coat of arms for the city. Located at the base of the Waalburg bridge.
I'm going to guess that it was taken in Nijmegan, Netherlands. I did a google image search for "elaborate coat of arms in flowers" and found a postcard with this same flower arrangement. The website described the "flower medallion" as the Nijmegan coat of arms. In the other picture, the word "Noviomagus" (part of the town's original name) is easily discernible from the purple flowers. This took me maybe 3 minutes.
ReplyDelete-Tessa
Nijmegen, Holland. I went to Google Images and searched for "coat of arms flowers" and scrolled down.
ReplyDeleteNijmegen, Netherlands, near the German border. View is from the observation point at the Belvedere, overlooking the Waal road bridge.
ReplyDeleteAbout 4 minutes. Used google and described what I saw to find the correct coat of arms. Continued to use Google to find pictures of the coat of arms in flowers. Found the description of the area here: http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1f05fa/
Nijmegen,.. Dutch people also read Lifehacker :-)
ReplyDeleteExcellent. Glad to hear it!
DeleteNijmegen, Netherlands.
ReplyDeleteIt took me less than 2 minutes.
I searched in google image for "arms two lions crown and bicephalic eagle". I found that the arms of netherlands were real close to these, so I thought it had to be a town or a land in Netherlands.
I searched in google image for "netherlands arms flowers" and found the answer.
Nijmegen, the Netherlands
ReplyDeleteI went to Wikipedia's page on double-headed eagles in heraldry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Double-headed_eagle), looked at all the coats of arms listed, and then confirmed that this was in Nijmegen by doing a Google image search on "Nijmegen coat of arms" and coming up with this: http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-R6VVZGmGEWY/T6aV_E232iI/AAAAAAAADR0/TqCrGOyQR4E/s1600/nijmegen_flower_medallion.jpg
Total time: about 20 minutes (I wasted about 15 minutes trying to blazon the coat of arms and search that way before using the technique outlined above).
Hi Dan,
ReplyDeleteI just found this. I didn't keep careful track of the time, but I would guess it was around 10 min. I found a web page (http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/p/m/1f05fa/) containing a different image of the same thing with the following caption: "If you go to the observation point at the Belvedere, overlooking the Waal road bridge, you'll see this lovely floral display of the Nijmegen Coat of Arms." I guess that answers how it was taken. Well, I should add that it is in the Dutch city of Nijmegen.
I first used search-by-image on Google image search, but that was no help. Then I added search terms to that and examined pages about coats of arms. I didn't see any that were an exact match, but I started doing searches using the names of countries whose coats of arms were similar. I tried Belgium, Luxembourg and Netherlands and the 3rd was the charm.
Finally, using the query { coat-of-arms netherlands flowers } I found a picture of a postcard with an image of the same display. That was on this page: http://postmuse.blogspot.com/2012_08_26_archive.html. Then, to make sure that I had the correct location, I did a simple Google web search with the query { Nijmegen coat of arms flowers }. The 2nd result had what I was after and another image of the floral coat-of-arms.
I never did run across the exact image that you showed.

Good evening.
ReplyDeleteAccording to my search/research, i found out that this is a park located in Nijmegen, a city in the east of the Netherlands, near the German border.
To get there, i had the following steps:
1st: google images: orange lions blue shield
2nd: google images: orange lions brown shield
3rd: I got some similar shields with the words "je maintiendrai" on it.
4th: google images: "je maintiendrai park"
5th: Finally i saw this image: http://www.flickr.com/photos/zjootsuite/18050319/in/photostream which as a tag from Nijmegen.
6th: I did some extra digging just to be sure that the information is correct and i got this: http://www.ejpix.com/photos/enlarge-photo.php?media_id=292801184706468706_32603973 which made confortable with this answer.
Thank you for the challenge.
This is in Nijmegen, the oldest city of the Netherlands, near the Belvedere tower. I saw flowers, and orange Lions in the picture, so I thought it must be Dutch. I then Googled "lion shield flowers". My brother-in-law went there and he recognized the picture because he saw it with his own eyes. It says Noviomagus underneath the shield.
ReplyDeleteNijmegen, Holland.
ReplyDeleteThis is in Nijmegen, Bloemenwapen taken from the Hotel Belvédère, and is located at 51° 50' 51.97" N 5° 52' 21.95" E.
ReplyDeleteIt took me about ten minutes to find. First I searched for "coat arms 'lion on crest' crown above" to figure out it was the coat of arms of the Netherlands. That took 3 minutes. Then searching for "coat arms netherlands" flowers or garden didn't turn up anything until I went to FLickr, where using those keywords i found the location in less than a minute.

ReplyDeleteHow did I find it well its a coat of arms, its floral and it looks like one from the netherlands. Built the search that way using google images
It took a lot of time to me, started with [two lions shield] in image search and found similar images and found that it is called coat of arms. which made it go simple
ReplyDeleteI searched every possible combination of the words everyone else used to find it and got nothing. I knew it must be the somewhere in the Netherlands because this is the general format for every locale in that country, but nothing even a search at a heraldry website came up with the exact match. I tried "rampant" "lion" "eagle" "shield" "flowers", "garden" "lawn" and got nothing. Looks like the successful people used flickr, I'll try that next time. I'm still amazed this didn't come up right away, probably due to the common tags for this image being in Dutch?
ReplyDeleteMy answer is: Nijmegen, The Netherlands
ReplyDeleteThis took me about 10 minutes to find.
I started by trying a Google image search using the image to find similar images. This was no help. Then I tried various image searches using terms like 'coat of arms garden', 'coat of arms flowers', 'garden lions coat of arms'. Eventually I searched for 'flower garden as a coat of arms'. In this search I saw the Vatican gardens which has a similar garden. I continued to search through this image search and found this image on Flickr:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/stewie1980/3723437695/
Below this image were the words 'Nijmegen, Bloemenwapen'. I assumed this was a city so I decided to search Gogole Maps for 'Nijmegen, Bloemenwapen'. This took me to Nijmegen in the Netherlands. I could tell from the flickr image that the garden was located near a bridge and water. In Google Maps, I zoomed out a little to see two bridges. I zoomed in on one of the bridges and saw what appears to be the same coat of arms in a garden.

To be sure, I turned on the photos layer in Google Maps and saw numerous photos of this garden.

The answer is Nijmegen, Holland. This one took me about half an hour to find. After many keyword tries, I finally did an image search for floral dragons "coat of arms" and filtered it by photo. That brought up a postcard that someone posted on this site: http://postmuse.blogspot.com/2012_08_26_archive.html. I'm not sure if they are dragons, but it worked for me.
ReplyDelete1st search: crest orange lions
ReplyDeleteFound that the Royal Crest of the Netherlands is similar to the crest in the image.
2nd search: image search "netherlands royal coat of arms flowers" found the image linked to this site: http://postmuse.blogspot.com/2012_08_26_archive.html that describes the flower medallion and the bridge in Nijmegen, Netherlands.
3rd search: map search for Nijmegen, Netherlands, confirmed the presence of the flower crest and the location.
Went through the following:
ReplyDelete[city emblems lions]
[city emblem lions]
[city shield lions] -> the follwing shows similarity:
http://english.turkcebilgi.com/Coat+of+arms+of+Bulgaria
But it is not there yet, so I try to describe what I see:
[lions holding shield with lion and crown]
I get to the coat of arms of the Netherlands - this is getting closer. Next is:
[Netherlands coat of arms flowers]
And the mentioned postcard from Nijmgen is revealed
About 5 minutes
I did not solve this challenge. I tried image search but no coat of arms that was close enough.
ReplyDeleteThen I used the closest coat of arms zeroing in on similar images adding descriptive words. I didnt narrow it down sufficiently.
I reread the challenge and the "IS boxing day" sent me chasing origins of boxing day in England and thinking St. Stephen made be the link. Nothing I found linked this to a coat of arms.
I did get to wikipedia Netherlands but Bulgaria seemed closer but wrong.
I then started reading others results but I wasn't satisfied that the methods were anything more then stumbling on to the best keywords. I spent a few hours but never felt my efforts were smart search moves. I keep learning which keep me coming back.
Ok I found Google Earth Hacks to be helpful to find interesting sites. Lots of flower gardens of coat of arms'
