SearchResearch Challenge (8/14/24): Finding the earliest aerial photos from your area?

 Photos from the heavens...

Early aerial photo by Gaspard-Félix Tournachon, aka Nadar, from a hot air balloon.
Near Montmartre, Paris, 1866. P/C Wikimedia.

... can reveal marvelous things.  Here's a 19th century white horse depicting King George carved into the hillside in southeast England.

Osmington White Horse from 1808.  P/C/ Google Earth (2024)

As we saw last week, it's possible to find aerial photos of a particular region, but often tricky to find ones that are exactly of the place you want, and taken at the time you want.

The Uffington White Horse was created some time between 1380 and 550 BC,
during the late Bronze Age or early Iron Age. P/C Wikimedia A recent photo
of an ancient image.

In searching for the shellmounds of the San Francisco Bay Area, I was constantly looking at images that were close... but not quite on target.  Or I was looking at images that were a decade too late for the traces I was seeking.

I bet I'm not the only person with this issue.  So let's do some collective problem-solving on this and figure out...

1. What's the best way to find the earliest possible aerial photos taken of some area?  As we work on this, tell us how you found the earliest aerial images of the place where you live (Vancouver Island, Mexico City, Portugal, Rio de Janeiro, etc.)

I wanted early aerial images of the area close to Stanford, Palo Alto, and Mountain View.  I found some.  More importantly: What lessons should we learn about finding aerial photos?  IS there a general method for finding historic aerial imagery?  Or does every place have it's own special and particular story?

Let us know in the comment thread below.

Keep searching!

  1. Using my general principle of asking why information will be available is key for a questions such as this. Today (2024) there are satellite pictures of the whole world - easily accessible and so searching for images post 1980s is feasible. But what about earlier images? These will be available for a range of reasons: historic landmarks, new buildings, amateurs taking aerial views and then subsequently putting their photos in collections... So to find old photos, look for collections rather than photos of particular locations as these are likely to be modern. (One of my favourite sites for finding a particular modern location is what3words.com - and then linking to Google maps where you can scroll back to find the earliest street view / satellite image. I've used this to report a pot hole in a road that hadn't been fixed to show how long it had been present!)

To find old photos I was lucky. I put in "Aerial photography Stanmore" for the area I live in and the 2nd link was https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos allowing me to find photos a few minutes walk from my house taken 95 years ago. (https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos/record/EPW053038 - compare to today at https://tinyurl.com/stanmorebroadway.
This photo was before the tube station was built in 1932 - seen at https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos/record/EPW053038 (with today at https://tinyurl.com/kerrycourt).

I suspect that these are the earliest known photos because of the source. I also considered that any photos would be taken from a plane that flew from a local airport and there's a list of UK RAF airports at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_former_Royal_Air_Force_stations that includes the old Hendon Aerodrome - also near me - that was founded in 1908. It was known as a place of pioneering experiments including the first airmail, the first parachute descent from a powered aircraft, the first night flights, and the first aerial defence of a city. The first commercial aerial photo was taken from Hendon according to https://images.historicenglandservices.org.uk/landscapes/aerial-views/first-aerofilms-photograph-epw000001-1477825.html

In fact the location was used for balloon flights dating from 1862 according to Wikipedia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hendon_Aerodrome) so there may be older photos of my area taken from balloons - although less likely. https://heritagecalling.com/2016/04/13/ballooning-in-bowler-hats-early-images-from-victorian-skies/ says that the earliest surviving photos taken from a balloon England were discovered at a car boot (garage) sale in 2015 and are now part of the Shadbolt Collection at the Historic England site (e.g. https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/photos/item/CVS01/01/020).

According to https://www.ianvisits.co.uk/articles/photos-of-victorian-london-from-a-hot-air-balloon-15567/ the oldest photo was taken in 1858 of Paris but has not survived. The oldest surviving aerial photo was taken in 1860 of Boston (https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/this-picture-of-boston-circa-1860-is-the-worlds-oldest-surviving-aerial-photo-14756301/) and the first aerial movie from a plane was taken near Rome in 1909 by Wilbur Wright. Apparently this pre-dated the first still photo - taken in 1910 according to https://www.aviationtrailinc.org/post/first-motion-picture-from-an-airplane (with the movie).

Another source for old aerial photos (also from the search) came from https://ncap.org.uk/ - the National Collect of Aerial Photography claiming to be one of the largest collections of aerial imagery in the world, containing tens of millions of images featuring historic events and places around the world (with 1700 pre-1930 aerial photos - although none from the USA).

    6. best recollection, not much of a strategy -
used [Puebla Antigua historic aerial photos]
then looked through 'images' off the SERP
the translate on X didn't work, so used Google translate,
      then searched 'Interoceanic railroad'…

  7. There are several chalk figures in the UK. https://www.telegraph.co.uk/travel/picturegalleries/5758415/Top-10-Britains-largest-hill-figures.html list 10 although apparently there were many more.

The most interesting is the Cerne Abbas Giant - which make the horses seem tame (and the Telegraph news article shows how this has been used for other purposes). The image is NSFW! It's a bit older than 1000 years old according to https://www.smithsonianmag.com/smart-news/scholars-are-one-step-closer-solving-mystery-enormous-chalk-figure-180977725/.

The earliest aerial photo I found was from images putting in "Cerne Giant" and dates to 1935 shown in https://archaeologynationaltrustsw.wordpress.com/tag/cerne-abbas-giant/. The Historic England site I linked to earlier seems to only have 1947 photos. https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos/record/EAW010549 and https://historicengland.org.uk/images-books/archive/collections/aerial-photos/record/EAW003577

Which suggests that searching for historic images of important sites may require searching by image or title of the monument. A good approach for old images is to filter to B&W pictures as older images are less likely to be coloured.
