A note about searching Google Scanned Newspaper archives

As you might know, Google currently has a collection of newspaper archives that's worth knowing about.

It turns out that the Newspaper Archive search still works, it just requires a bit of special technique to actually search it out.

and it will show you a popup.  Fill in the fields the way you want, THEN do a date-restrict to the dates you want, and THEN in the "Source" field, enter the name of the newspaper you want.

Here's an example of looking for "Phrygian Cap"  (as we discussed in an earlier SRS post about these hats).

And the results...

If you click on the first result, you'll see this excerpt from the NYTimes of 1893

As another example, you can put in the name of one of the newspaper scanned collection in the source: field.  To wit,

Be sure you put in the name of a newspaper that we have in our scanned archive.  (Check out the full list of scanned newspapers at:  news.google.com/newspapers )

Once you're on a roll and have started one of these, you can then substitute the name of another paper in the source: field slot at the top of the page without having to go back to the original URL shown above.

It's not handy, but it works, and you can vary the date-range AND source to be what you want it to be.

Let us know what interesting things you discover in the news archives.

(My favorite from this morning was to look up something more about "hand grenades" used to put out fires, again, as discussed in an earlier SRS post.)

From the Brandon Mail, Aug 25, 1887... Article:  "Burned at sea.  The SS City of Montreal burned to the water's edge in mid-ocean"

In the section, "The Captain's Version," the scene was described:

What can YOU find?

Search on!

  1. Years ago I bought a book on the Lusitana (sank 1912) which I haven’t read yet. Reading your news article brought this to mind. I immediately used the news.google advanced search and came up with this article from the Flushing Daily Times 1915. *newspaper article*

I’m surprised there were so few news articles in these archives. I know I could go to a London / Belfast newspaper to see what they have archived in the British Press

But that would give me a perspective that has likely been examined exhaustively. In this day of online search ability could we gain different perspective if we could examine Germany’s newspaper archives. Perhaps there are resources online that didn’t exist in print. Are there any underwater images of the ship if its still in place? Isn’t Streetview going underwater now as well? What was said years later after historians had the opportunity to examine the research globally. Just a thought that came to mind. Anyone?

PS I like the extension Too Many Tabs suggested and as well Tabjump- both make searching more efficient so thanks for the recommendation CMoore.

    1. Rosemary, I think you might have short-changed yourself. Lusitania went down in 1915 not 1912,
When I did this SEARCH [ lusitania source:"New York Times" location:USA]
I found lots of articles including German reactions. All in NYT of course

jon who uses British & Dutch newspaper archives mostly

    2. Jon - It's good to see you took an interest in my posting. I wasn't suggesting you start the challenge. What I would have found interesting is knowing if people wanted to take on this subject. I wasn't expecting more but nice to see I spark your interest. At least if we did this challenge I will have the right year now. I should read the book.

    3. remmij - Good finds. The ship site at 51.416667,-8.55. Here's the map link

It doesn't look like we can visit using Streetview, just yet. I am keen to see how technology can help us re-examine history.

  3. The Newspaper Archive is so rich! I recommend the search you describe, Dr. Russell, to our students for primary sources, just after a particular event's occurrence. Here's a little demo that might be helpful: How to Use Google News to Find Primary Sources

  4. Dan--A question. When I go into the archives it wants articles under m/dd/yy, but if I'm searching for articles from the 1800's and 1900's, I can't seem to have access to anything. Is there a trick? I'm trying to find articles around the Progressive Era with regards to sanitation, urbanization, and crime.

  5. This no longer works. The only way to search the newspaper archives now is to go to the regular google search at www.google.com, and PRECEDE your search by "site:google.com/newspapers" (without the quotes.) followed by your search terms. In another customer-unfriendly change, you can't filter your newspaper results by date anymore. When you try to limit the date range using the specified dates, you get nothing, because the dates filter the NEWS, not the scanned newspapers.

    ReplyDelete
  6. In other words, setting the date limits filters the date ADDED, not the actual date of of the scanned newspaper article.

  7. This could be good news: http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!category-topic/news/Gl23RwnTIlg
Hopefully this means they make their huge newspaper archive, so many people depend on, accessible and searchable a proper way --like it once was before the unasked-for news/newspaper merger.

  8. It used to be a great easy way to find stuff. They have made it nearly impossible. Even the "site:google.com/newspapers" search no longer works like it did at first. Very disappointed in the way Google has hidden all this material from us.

  9. I think this doesn't work at all any more

  10. It doesn't work anymore, at all, period. The only thing you can do to find results in a newspaper is add "nid=(number of the paper)" to the search terms. E.g. "nid=1955" for the Reading PA Eagle. The promised "facelift" hasn't been implemented 8 months after its announcement. I think that was BS meant to deflect complaints on their forums. Thanks Google. NOT.

  11. I've included your web site in a new blog posting and thought you should be aware of it.

  12. Interesting post and comments. I will have to try this out. The only problem I see is that you will find stuff that was highlighted in the first place so if uncle Harry's name was not highlighted in the 1912 Iowa newspaper then you will never find him... poor Harry. I just published a new Canada English newspapers table (from the Google News Archive) which your readers might find helpful -- https://newspaperproject2012.wordpress.com/2016/05/01/how-to-search-google-scanned-news/ --- I also posted your article (this article) on my blog page so my readers can have your detailed "How To" account for their searches. Thank You for posting this.

  13. Searching the newspapers really sucks now! It won't find anything like it used to! Before I could type in a name and get a whole list of articles and now it won't find a one! What the heck happened???? I was in the middle of a book! Please rebuild your search program!!!!

    1. Let me check into what's going on. Agree that it's not as good as it once was.

  14. Not sure why but for research even regular Google is getting worse and worse. It's like if you search for a particular person it'll give a link to "Brad Pitt" for example, because he's a person. Awful! I'd suggest searching via something like newspapers.com - they will find the page and then ask you for a credit card. So now you at least know where to look.
