Audible books are life-changing.
When I go on long road trips, listening to audible books (previously known as "books on tape") are an essential item. They keep me awake and listening, especially when I'm driving those long, straight stretches of highways in the American west that seem to go on endlessly.
Sometimes I don't want a podcast but just a good old-fashioned novel. When I need such a thing I often turn to places like Audible.com for recent books and pay a small amount of money for the right to download the audible file.
But every so often I want to listen to a book that's a classic--Treasure Island, Catch-22, or The Return of Sherlock Holmes. Is there a simple way to do this? That's the Challenge for this week...
1. Is there a simple way to find free audible versions of classic books? (Such as Treasure Island, Catch-22, or The Return of Sherlock Holmes.) What's your method of finding these?
2. Do you know of a public repository of less common books that would also allow you to download the audio files? (Books like The Autobiography of Mother Jones.)
3. My cousin in Stockholm recommended I listen to a book that she really liked: Män som hatar kvinnor. But I can't find an audio version of that title in English. Can you find one?
This week isn't that hard, but it brings up a couple of good points about searching for something that's not just another web page. See what you can do with this!
Keep Searching!
Hi Dr. Russell
ReplyDeleteI have seen some on YouTube. But never visited them so not sure are what we are looking for. It's an interesting Challenge and very helpful one.
About Q3, searched the tittle to get the English and Spanish name:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. Also Wikipedia says for Spanish: " Män som hatar kvinnor (titulada Millennium 1: Los hombres que no amaban a las mujeres, literalmente en español: "Los hombres que odian a las mujeres" ..."
Reading the two language titles sound like two different things (English and Spanish.) I don't remember if I already watched that movie.
Now with the titles in the desired language, will search for it
I was searching for the Q3 book. [
DeleteThe Girl with the Dragon Tattoo audiobook] and found some possible good results. One lasts an hour. And that brings my question. How we can know if the audiobook is complete? Specially if we find some free options.
With [List of best audiobook free] I know it's not the best query, however, gives good results.
DeleteIn Libribox, found again in section: Other people asked, is available to download The Autobiography of Mother Jones, complete

I am really surprised that you refer to audio books as "audible" books: I have never heard anyone use that phrase except when promoting Audible.com. And what you refer to as "a small amount of money" is far beyond the budget of many people. I am confident that you are not, but you sound like a shill.
ReplyDeleteYou're right--I'm not a shill. I don't get any money from Audible.com or Amazon (which owns Audible.com).
DeleteI was using the word "audible" (note the lower case letter "a") as a descriptive term, that's all. No endorsement expressed or implied. I note that "Audiobook" is also the name of a company that produces books that can be heard. That's not an endorsement either.
WRT "small amount of money," it's true that individual's price sensitivity varies quite a bit. Many audio books are in the $10 - $25 range, which isn't extraordinarily expensive.
In next week's answer we'll talk about the role of libraries in providing free access to many such audible / audio / hearable books!
As you probably know the American Library Association (ALA) has resources as does the Internet Archives and government agencies has resources on this topic which I may mention next week if you do not.
DeleteThanks. I wasn't trying to be a troll or offensive, it's just that the phrase "audible book" really jarred as being odd.
Delete$10-$25 is, arguably, very expensive if the same book can be bought as a used paperback for under $5 -- it's all relative! It also depends whether you value the convenience of an andio book that you'll probably only listen to once, or whether you value a physical object that you can give to a friend (or sell).
I found all the books mentioned (Q1 & Q3) available through my local public library here in Auckland, New Zealand :-) via Overdrive.
