When you like something...
P/C Gemini. [create an image of a hall of mirrors with trees and mountains] |
... you probably want some more. And sometimes you want something similar--not quite the same thing, but something that's close, but perhaps with a slightly different take. Maybe something that's a refracted / reflected / slightly transformed version of your original idea.
This happens to me when I'm researching a topic and want additional information that's not just a duplicate of what I've already got.
And this is our Challenge for this week:
1. How can you find related sites (or content) to something that you know about? Suppose you want to learn more about Search and Research methods: Can you find similar or related websites to our trusty SearchResearch1.blogspot.com?
2. Same question, but about a different website: Again, one of my favorite sites, www.3blue1brown.com (an excellent science/math/tech site with lots of exquisite videos illustrating complex topics).
I know you can find these sites, but HOW can you do it?
BIG HINT: No matter what Google tells you when you search for similar sites, e.g. [how to find related sites on Google], the related: operator has been deprecated since June, 2023. It is no more--it has ceased to be. (See the note from Google's SearchLiaison.)
What would you tell a friend about how to do this kind of search?
Let us know in the comments.
Keep searching.
Some years ago, I tried to find related sites to SearchReSearch. I remember that I used related. Also tried adding word similar. The results were not good.
ReplyDeleteI am sure that there's not another space like this.
To search for the topic my advice has been always: Keyword site: SearchReSearch.... And after that we have a lot to keep going.
About this Challenge. I'm not sure how to. Not just because related is gone but because similar or related can be tricky. I think it's like when we use Around () a connection is there but not always is what we want.
I'm looking forward to learn. And also going to visit Q2 site. I didn't know about it. Or at least I don't remember it now

Several years ago I would have gone to each of the web sites and used one or two Chrome extensions. Similar Sites was one by Google and another was called Similicio.us. The later changed to a web site to paste in a URL and it would return sites with similar content and web traffic. Google's extension was deprecated long ago and one now SimilarWeb requires an account. I did find that SimilarWeb also has SimilarSites which I was able to access. SearchResearch wasn't in their database, but 3Blue1Brown was and offered what it believes to be similar sites.
ReplyDeleteAfter that I returned to what I shared in a previous challenge:
"I subscribe to Eric Maierson's Fave 5 Newsletter.
A few weeks ago it had a link to Yogurrt - A Discovery Engine."
Using the SearchResearch URL, Yogurrt analyzed the content and return a list of attributes it gleaned from the content. I selected a few and clicked Get Recommendation. Some of the recommendations I already subscribe to such as Brain Pickings and Open Culture, but many of the others looked very interesting. Selecting different criteria and levels of inclusion or avoidance would alter what is recommended.
I repeated using Yogurrt for 3Blue1Brown, both for the web site URL and then Yogurrt's YouTube setting for 3Blue1Brown YouTube channel.
I then went to Product Hunt . It's a site I've used to find similar tools and apps. I tried to look for tools for finding similar web sites and didn't come up with anything. Then I thought maybe using similar or related were the wrong terms to be using. Maybe use the new term I'd learned from Yogurrt, "Discovery Engine". The results were illuminating to say the least. So many to try. One toward the top of the list made me veer down another path, Pinterest.
Why was Pinterest listed? Of course, user created and moderated boards of similar sites. Unfortunately, I didn't find anything for either 1 or 2 of the challenges, but it did make me think of the basic premise of Pinterest, social bookmarking.
I went to one of the most recent ones I had used in education, Wakelet. Searching for the titles of 1 or 2 didn't provide anything, but searching for the URLs did.
That's where I left it because it was getting recursive with finding similar sites to find similar sites. :-D
Frederick, well written, constructed and useful… will check out Fave 5 -- thank you

Any insights into why Google did away with the "related" operator or, for that matter, the cached version of pages?
ReplyDeleteI don't know the real reason, but RELATED: wasn't used very much, and it's hard to keep it accurate and high quality. Since it was relatively unused (and it costs real money to keep the related: index around), I bet it went away in a cost-cutting move. Same thing for the cached pages. Those take a huge amount of storage. I'm sure they thought "why bother" when the Internet Archive does a much better job?
